a day out with steve

Greetings, neighborhood friends.

So I will not be writing in Spanish because many of you will not understand me, so I will stick with American English for this one. I don't know why I didn't think of that before...

Today was off the chain. First off I worked out with Steve Xu (Let me say that Steve is the best man that you can be hanging out with. He is super cool, smart, and very fine, and studies at Cornell. What more is there to love?) and Thanh at Thanh's house.  Anyway, we did some pylometrics for about an hour (I will most definitely feel that tomorrow morning) and we barely made it through. Actually I feel more energized near the end of an exercise session so I went all out and crazy; I hope I do not regret that tomorrow. I also feel bad for sweating all over Thanh's nice carpet... maybe he will think it was his sweat :p

I have also decided to eat healthy for the past few days. I had a lot of grilled chicken salads and some eggs and for dinner I would have what ever my mom makes me, which is either rice or noodles or sandwiches. I also drink tons of water and eat snacks throughout the day to keep my metabolism up and my hunger down. So far so good (the food too).

Loi (that is Thanh's little brother) drives us and shows us around Pearland Center (that is the mall there). Everything is so brand new! I went there probably 2 years ago and it expanded a bit, and is still expanding. It is an out door centre so we get soaking wet in sweat as the UV rays hit us full impact. We walk a lot and talk a lot but we did not shop a lot. Me and Steve got good deals (as always) and got some swimming trunks for the beach and a sexy T shirt for the casual days that lie ahead of us. Very manly indeed.

Me and Steve then part from the brothers, and head toward Meyerland to hit up Old Navy, Ross, and Marshall's (we are boss like that). We stocked up on summer athletic clothing so we will be fashionably fit. I also got this rain jacket that was NOT on sale but I could not resist because it was the perfect rain jacket. Plus me and Steve always make it rain, and when we make it rain, it pours. So that was probably the first item not on sale that I have purchased in a very long time.. since I am the smart shopper that saves money by spending less. Me and Steve are like professional shoppers, we get the best deals and we shop smart. We almost got some useless shoes that shape you up, and we were like nah, we will shape ourselves up the real way and not waste money doing so, even if we do save a good $70 bucks.. Minds of an athlete right there. We also got these athletic tanks that show our gut, so we will wear them proud once we get things straight. I can not wait till that day comes.

After that we go to Half Price Books and buy a ton of books on clearance, as usual. It is win win since we help them clear out the shelves as we fill ours. Tonight I will delve into the minds of Scrabble champions (even though I honestly should be resting)... it should be an interesting read. I also got some management book and a book about how some people make a living playing video games (playing video games were my golden days), and 10 other books that were just interesting/funny/useful. We even got a good deal on our books because everything was 20% off due to the Memorial day weekend! Score.

So that pretty much sums up my date with Steve. Some of the girls may be jealous, but it is okay. We had our fun. It was good catch up/hang out time for us, and is a nice break from the rather routine work out and eating and spade playing, movie watching nights. Plus we only do this once or twice a year so don't hate!

bike w/ jenny + kaili by dallcingi at Garmin Connect - Details

Hi, this does not count as a Spanish post since I am just trying to see if I can upload some workouts...
That would have been lame anyways.

This was a casual bike ride with some sprints (mainly on roads so I could get out of cars way) with Jenny and Kaili! We went on the Braes Bayou and went through Rice University and the Medical center. Jenny had to get her house keys from her mom from Texas Childrens Hospital so we did just that. Fun day! Then we went to Steve's house to eat and play cards. After that I got to bake some banana bread with Karen and we played at Dave and Busters for free because it was national game day. Okay well that was that.. I will be getting ready to go watch Bellaire High School orchestra perform now! Bye guys!

heated, hot, and humid

Hello folks! That right there is the perfect description of Houston right now. I sweat in my car no matter if the A/C is on or if the windows are down, so I just roll down my windows to save some gas (unless I am on the highway of course). But that is the environment I am working with right now. I am used to it so I can take it hot.

So I have to say I am not working as a waiter this summer. My father disproves of that because he is very narrow minded. He believes that it will have negative influences on me because he thinks the waiters/workers there are not cool (He has not even met them before or anything! He just assumes with his little Asian mind). My mom said that he said to her that he was scared that the waiters will ask me to eat dinner with them after a shift............. so I was like ok just forget it, I will simply not work because that thought is so absurd, he would say anything for me to not work. I had to fight hard to work last summer and in the end I won and had a good time. It seems as if though he forgot I worked last summer and had NO issues with anyone or anything at all... and that I got along with everybody there and experienced the real world that he has been shielding me from. So this summer looks like another shielded one (ironic, because he did not allow me to tint my car, which I will do anyway because I rather stay cool in my car than roast like a piece of beef, hence the delicious roast beef sandwich. At least I will be delicious though). So maybe it wont be shielded from the sun. But wait I already made an appointment with a tint service man to come on Tuesday, so too bad. Looks like I am staying "cool" this summer in my car!

That leaves me with a bunch of extra free time, since I only have class (American lit) 2 hours a day for 5 days a week for 6 weeks. So far I have been just taking it easy. I have seen some friends and exercised and ate and slept some. But now that I know I am out of work, I realized I need to start making goals and plans. What do I want to do to improve my life? What aspects do I need to jump on? What will this summer bring to me, and what will I make of it? These are questions that I ask myself? Oh yes indeed. My past summers were busy enough, but this time seems like I have to take charge of it, which I am not very good at. So I was at HEB with my mom and just thought of some ideas so my summer is not a complete waste of time. These aren't really in complete order of priority, just what I thought of.

1. Exercise. I have to keep up with this. This is no joke, my mom and dad constantly remind me how fat I have gotten and tell me that I must diet or else girls will not like me. Just kidding about the last part, but not kidding about this is no joke. BUT! but but but but butt. I KNOW I am not fat. So it's okay. My parents are from Vietnam so they are not used to big Asian people. My mom told me today that she is so amused how she gave birth to un huesudo (a big boned person) because she is sooooooo very skinny and is at risk of osteoporosis. I think American milk has something to do with this.

I actually do weigh a lot though. In the afternoon, I hit up to 168 lbs. and once i saw 169 lbs. but in the morning after my business before i eat after i brush my teeth I am 165 lbs. (hey gotta scrape off any of that plaque that's adding to my weight) so I guess I am 165 lbs. That is about a 10 pound weight difference since the start of my Sophomore first semester, and a 20 pound difference since my beginnings at Baylor. I blame Pendland and their fajitas, turkey burgers, enchiladas, guacamole, eggs, reuben sandwiches, greek gyros, pasta, pizza, potatoes, chicken salad, desserts, omelettes, mashed potatoes, zucchini, ice cream, everything (besides the chicken breast)! So I am going to couple that with eating healthier and perhaps I will learn to cook some healthy meals. I guess that is point number 2.

But before that I must tell you how I will accomplish this feat. My goal is to perhaps lose 5 lbs since I will probably lose fat and gain muscle. My good friends Thanh and Steve and Jenny (and anyone else whom I will work out with) will keep me accountable. Thanh, occasionally Steve, and I will be doing P90X over the course of the summer and so far, so good; We did 2 whopping days of it! And Jenny will cycle with me. I realized I prefer working out with others since I apparently lack motivation or just suck at exercising since every time I do something alone it is not good. But I also have another goal: cycle at least 400 miles this summer. No es facil (It is not easy) but that simply means for 30 days, I have to do my normal route which is about 13 miles. I think I will start riding with a group that meets every Thursday as well and learn from them. I never ridden bikes in a peloton (big group of people, about 10+) before so that will be fun and exciting. Maybe I can post some mileage as motivation! We will see how that works out. (I love puns)

I am also glad I will not be spending $100 bucks for a gym membership, since the gym I go to reeks of sweat and testosterone. I'd rather save that and work out in the comfort of my own house where I can do it anytime I want and in piece and in any type of clothing (or lack of). Gotta save money if I am not working!

2. Eat healthy and learn to cook. I must do this to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I already started to do this today when I went to HEB by myself and bought some chicken breast, brown rice crackers, low fat string cheese, couscous, salmon, tuna, cottage cheese, and vegetables. No more chips, popcorn, and... what ever else I ate for snacks that were unhealthy, for me! My mom told me when I took her to HEB that she will teach me how to cook, and she is a good cook! And she is a healthy eater too so I can trust her recipes and ways.

The trick here is to eat constantly, but steadily. Instead of 3 meals, I will eat 5-6 or 7 times a day but small portions, so I will never go hungry. This will keep my metabolism up, and my stomach not full, but content. And I am trying to follow the P90X nutrition guide, so that might be a challenge too!

3. Pick up my guitar. I took one class in senior year in high school but that is not enough. I should practice more as it will ease any stress and I will sound good while doing so. It is way better than venting it in other ways! Actually I can vent stress via working out too but I am never stressed so it wont matter. I should play some of the popular songs since they only use 4 chords or so and are catchy and I can attempt to sing along. I lost my guitar callouses so I am bummed about that, but then again my parents never let me bring up my guitar to Waco. I hope to bring it up this time though, especially if I can play it well enough. Then I can really de-stress from my classes. Plus I think music is important and I do not play any instruments so this will be nice.

4. Read something. There are things that I realize I appreciate now that I do not do them anymore. Reading is one of them. It used to be a requirement, we were forced to read. Now, I don't even do it! Same goes for writing. So I think I will head to the book store and pick up some novel, and read it when I am there. Time to toss those magazines aside for a bit, as they are cool, but are not the same. Hopefully the American lit class will make me read something interesting.. they will probably be poems or some short stories.. I dunno. This also ties to writing. I am already writing with this blog, but I will be required to write essays too. That should be fun.

5. Practice Spanish. I actually thought of this right after I finished the last required Spanish class at Baylor (Also partly because Prof. Scott was the best man ever, he was born to teach Spanish!). I have been taking it for around 6 years and do not want to simply give this up! I will certainly miss Spanish classes, but I will practice it. I have a lot of friends at Baylor that speak it so that is no problem. Heck, I might write my next journal entry in Spanish! You should use google translate to see how accurate (or inaccurate) it is (I tend to write word for word translations so google should pick it up anyways)! Don't hold it against me (hahaha oh spears) though since I might forget. I wanted to work at Papasitos again so I can bust out some espanol but... not so much. I will read more stories in my text book that we got for Intermediate Spanish and keep looking over the vocab (albeit a ton of the words are very situational, while I was watching a soccer game I called a hairy man un hombre que es hirsutas , which should mean a hairy man, but Griscel's dad did not understand, so it was probably not from Mexico) since we did not read them all. Great stories they are!

Breaking blog news: I was just watching a Reds v. Phillies game and the 2nd basement, Valdez, was pitching since they ran out of players and want to save the relievers for other games. They are on the 19th inning, and have been playing for 6 hours! WOW! Valdez said "I can pitch" and the coach asked, "Are you sure?" and he said "Yes" and got 3 outs like it was his duty. He NEVER pitched before, ever. I find that very cool. Okay cool story, now back on topic.

Last weekend (Thurs + Fri), I spent the entire day with Griscels daddy and mommy (and the family as well). It felt as if I was a foreign exchange student since they fed me authentic Mexican food and spoke to me in mostly Spanish. We also watched TV in Spanish and watched a soccer game together. We always speak in Spanish and he says mine is good! I believe him. I also correct my mistakes right away as I realize them, if I realize them. Hopefully I can improve, or keep my Spanish intact this summer, and after that as well.

More breaking news, Valdez got the win! That will probably be his only one haha. Okay now back to my life.

6. Keep my house clean, AND the garage (that is my dad's territory though). Basically I wanna be my own maid. Last summer I cleaned it up VERY nice, but now it is back to being dirty again, especially with all of my Waco things (and ahem, my parents). So far the living room is clean, now I have to move on to my room. Actually I probably will leave my room as is since it will all go to Waco anyways. So much for that... The garage needs to be cleaned for the tint man so I need that clear by Tuesday! Once clean, it will stay clean (till next summer).

Ok I will stop there. I might think of other ideas later, and I will keep yall up to date! Hopefully I keep at least a couple of these goals going strong! But it will be better if I keep all of my goals up! Until next time.

houston happenings

Hello friends! I am back in the big H-town yeah baby! I got back on Sunday at 4am. It was pretty bad because I could not fit all of my stuff into the small rental car so we had to make two trips, totaling a total of 12 hour drive time. Ouch! Better off paying that extra $100 for the 2 months of rent and leave all my stuff up there... a lesson learned. My last week at Baylor was so chill. I got very good bonding time with Emilio and Bryan, since they were the last ones standing with me. We had Wing Stop on Thursday or so... and it was horrible; worst dinner ever. All 3 of us had huge stomach aches because we got 4 different flavors. We all thought the atomic (hottest flavor) was mild and we all ate it and had runny noses. That was sad.. but then we had some froyo and that helped fix my acidic stomach. Then I ate 2 tums and peptobismol at Bryans place and my stomach turned out to settle down. Me and Emilio stayed at Bryans place and sat down for about 6 whole hours! Ya we just talked and watched Bryan pack since we helped him pack earlier and this time was his personal belongings. Then we left and I went to sleep.

Come next day, I try to run, and I fail miserably. Then I realize it is Friday and I start packing frantically. My mom called and asked if I finished packing and I said yes and in sooth, I was nowhere near complete. I was not even done when they came! I think my Friday was lame cause I do not remember anything besides the fail run. Plus I ran out of water since Monday.. I wonder who stole it all. I blame that and my diet for my fail runs.. because I failed on Saturday too. I played racquetball by myself (ya I am a loser) and learned how to do z serve, lob serve, and kinda learned the kill serve.. except I almost killed my babies while doing that serve. Pretty painful. I will work on that later when I play rball again, since I do not know of any courts in my vicinity. I will miss rball since I recently got into it, as it is easy to learn and fun to play, and it is safe too at the beginner level (oh hey that's me!) Then my parents came and I stayed back with my mom while my dad went to drop off half my stuff in Houston. I saw Daniel, Josh, Christine, and Fred playing tennis and chatted with them for a bit, then I got dinner at Subway for me and my mother! It was only 5:30pm and I do not know how I did not get  hungry later that Sunday morning...

On Sunday my cousin David graduated from Texas Womans University (yes men are allowed to attend apparently) as a doctor of physical therapy! Congrats! Very accomplished feat. We are all so proud of him even though all we really care about was the buffet afterwards. I ate a ton, but my cousin Natalie ate more than me and she is in pretty good shape. And her boyfriend Ryan is pretty funny just like me, we are troll bros. We look the same, act the same, and we can both make some ugly faces. I came out of the buffet super duper full... and I skipped dessert too.

Then I sign up on class on Monday and attempt to unpack, but instead fold some clothes. I try to get my car fixed and they did not have the parts at Brake Check (or is it Just Brakes? cause they do brake checks...), so I will do it elsewhere for cheaper, courtesy of Griscel's papa. I just remembered that for some odd reason, I woke up at 1:30 pm.... so there went half of my day. I slept late that night too, about 1:30 am! Guess what time I woke up today?

So on Tuesday I woke up at 10am and wash my car. It looks very handsome, just like me. Nah I kid, but it does look a bit shiny. I used to car wash that my roomate Sean left behind... actually I have a lot of my roomates stuffs. Oh well I guess I could use them. Then I un packed a little bit more, and found out I spilled Bryans soap that he wanted me to hold, so I stopped un packing. I then see Karen and we go to Fioza and I got a coffee that made me sleepy. So much for 2 oz. of expresso shot! I think it was called... kings something, and it had coconut and banana in it. She didn't get anything but we did play scrabble! We decided to use abbreviations if they are in the Merrian-Webster dictionary, and that opened up a ton of possibilities. A lot of our words turned out to be xi,hd,ed,ln,lf,ri.... it was so ridiculous! I won in the end by some amount of points that does not matter. It was a great day, we just caught up and she gave me a belated birthday gift, which I was very surprised of! And I really like what she gave me haha. It is a very nice shot glass from Death Valley (ironic huh? shot glass, death valley?), its matte blue! I will use that when I am of age... (very hopefully). And a sand art maker which I will make for decorations for my apartment next year. Then after that, I eat dinner and my mom calls me fat again and to stop eating potato chips, but I finished the whole bag. We went to Target and she did not get any more chips.. but I got some Greek yogurt so it is more healthy and filling. Snagged the caramel and chocolate flavors... they do not offer those in Waco! They just have strawberry, honey, and blueberry.

That is basically what happened to me ever since where I left off. My favorite part was sleeping.

finals are finally over!

You read that right! Can you believe that? Quite frankly I can. Do you know what that means? Partyy! Haha well... I wish I say not really but I wont say it this time. Actually, a lot had happened ever since I talked about how this reminded me of xanga. Countless parties, weird eating patterns, lack of sleep... those all fit the bill. And it is only an hour into Wednesday morning! But I plan to sleep early and wake early tomorrow to vacuum Emilio's apartment and help Bryan move his belongings to a storage. Maybe by doing that, he will spare me a square foot or two. Hopefully this week will be relaxing because so far it has been a busy and interesting and eventful one.

On Saturday I went to Flora's place to help her clean her car. That was fun and we got wet, but it was hot too. We cooked some noodles and veggies with fish (well she cooked most of it I just stirred) and that was very delicious and healthy. She was preparing for a huge party so I caught a glimpse of all the epicness involved. It was a Mad Scientist theme and looked very promising. Then Shingo wakes up from his hibernation and we go get some Bahama bunk (or something, forgot the name, it was shaved ice) and Shingo threw away her treat!! Flora was so sad. We went to the mall and I helped Flora shop by holding her clothes (and she denies this, but I helped pick one of her articles of clothing that she purchased), while Shingo was getting a very cool haircut that makes him look very manly. Then we eat at On the Border. Our waiter was horribly terrible. See what I did there? He got a $.40 tip from me, and I did that to round off my tab. He dropped Flora's credit card into her dirty plate.. and talked to another table for 5 minutes while he was paying us out. A HUGE no-no. He cracked up corny jokes in hopes of higher tips and beneficial rapport. He called us out for requesting too many bags of chips. We waited over 20 minutes for our food to come out.. It was just awful. I could wait tables better than that, with one hand texting, my mouth running talking to a table with concerns, a tray in my other hand, delivering it to another table, with a checkbook in my apron ready to check a table out, and my buddys card in my shirt pocket to place an order for him. Now THAT is how you wait tables (minus texting obviously). That night I had a party at my place for people who were done with finals (actually only like 2 of the 12 were finished...) and that was fun (for the most part). I got home from dinner as they got to my place so I had to clean it very very fast... but it was ready in no time! So that's all that you need to know about Saturday night!

On Sunday, I studied most morning and afternoon and then I went out for dinner. I went to Shorty's pizza with Flora and Bryan and Christine Aleman and ate 7 pizzas because the others were full fast. Then we watched a movie, it was a boxing movie. I forgot the title because I was also studying while watching it. I asked so many bad questions so they got mad at me. I tried to study for real afterwards but was distracted by "loud people".. so I decided to migrate to my place but it was the same. I was studying with Karynah and she fell asleep around 3 am.. and I tried to wake her up and thought she was going to wake up later at 4 am, so I just went upstairs to bed. We both wake up at 8:30 am and study some more. She was frantically typing away as she was trying to get her papers printed, and was not happy how I did not slap her to wake her up. She ate like 15 of my precious papers but it is all good, the sacrifice is well worth it. I took my final finals and felt pretty good about them. I will check grades later I suppose, cause I rather enjoy life away from academics for right now.. since I will probably take some summer classes in Houston.

Later that day (it's now Monday), I cooked some mac and cheese and chicken and clam chowder soup with Flora and Bryan. I haven't created dinner in a long time (notice how I did not say cook because it actually wasn't real cooking, just boxes and canned goods) so that felt good. I bought enough snacks to last me till Saturday because I ran out of everything from chips to water, therefore, I will be barely scraping by. That night I got to see Fast Five on Monday night with Bryan, Flora, and her friends! The movie was so action packed that we were inspired to make noises in the car to mimic the film, and boy was that funny. Flora actually drove like Vin Diesel as well! She turned a sharp corner into HEB.  It is a great movie and I recommend it to people who enjoy being on the edge of their seats (in the movie theatre and in a car). Flora threw a party and that was fun (for the most part) and I got to meet some cool and nice people, but then I had a small party at my place afterwards. It was fun and that ran from 3-6am. That is all I shall say about that night.

I wake up today and go to the International House of Pancakes with Bryan, Karynah, Griscel (who had to go back to Houston) and Emilio. I had the big steak omelette and hash browns but could not finish the pancakes, so that is my breakfast for this morning. Then, because I only slept for 3 hours, I took what felt like a 3 hour nap. I woke up at 6pm and decide to work out, so I did that from 7pm-8pm. I had dinner at Bryan's place and brought veggies and he cooked pork that tasted like chicken (yes it was still good). We watched the Bulls and Hawks duke it out, but then Bryan passed out and phased in and out of sleep. That game was crazy good and very close, till the Bulls started to dominate that is. I tried to make a phone call and walked outside, then he freaking locked me out! So then I just left and went back to my place to shower and then cleaned the living room so I can load my stuff there tomorrow. I need to pack. I hear about a party but it was for seniors only.. so I guess there are benefits for being old! I need a break from that anyways so it is all good.

So that's what has been going on. I plan to run tomorrow and help people move and pack and clean my place too. I am also alone in the apartment so it feels very nice having a quiet environment. My neighbors have seemed to left as well. Peaceee! (literally)

this feels like xanga

Hello everybody. My name is Kevin if you do not know that already. And these are my thoughts. I created this blog and this feels like grown up xanga. Oh how much we have grown since that era. I decided to blog right now because I just ate some carnita taco, corn with very hot powder, and some refreshing horchata and I do not want to get fat off of it. I love horchata now. Vampire Weekend as a song titled "Horchata". That is how good it is. And now enter my life:

So today was great I had no finals but I still had to study in the morning. I ate cereal for breakfast and uploaded some music on my classic ipod. It needed to be revamped. Then in the afternoon, I saw Josh Vong and Thanh! Boy has Josh matured! Not really. You will see why later. We watch Johnny Nguyen kick butt in taekwondo on Youtube. Then we met up to go kayaking with Bethany and Ellen and Katherine. They are very good at kayaking and were very adventurous. Katherine almost fell out two times. And Bethany ran into two trees! But they were still very good, accidents happen. And I scared two ducks. I guess I am just bad with animals (girls included). We explored the entire lake or what ever that body of water is called. The weather was perfect too! Too bad Thanh and Josh went back to shore about an hour before. They missed out on the fun!

Then I ran into my cousin Guillaume and his friend Tommy. Me and Thanh eat dinner at Penland with them and I had 4 plates! Two were pasta, one had two fish on them, and the last one was chicken fajitas. Blame that on kayaking. Hopefully I do not gain too much weight. And then we all mess with Guillaume because he is sensitive but I hope he did not take it seriously. If he did, then he does not know me well at all. We try to decide something and we get the sporadic idea to go watch a movie! We see Thor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was very epic. Then I get texts from Flora and she wants to go see Something Borrowed since Thor and Fast Five were sold out later. So after the epicness of almighty Thor, Thanh takes Guillaume and Tommy home cause they have to go to sleep/study.. then enter Josh freaking Vong: he YELLS AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS and says "HEY KEVIN DID U JUST FINISH YOUR MOVIE? ARE U GONNA SEE ANOTHER ONE?" as I try to movie hop.. and there were three cops right in front of me!!! Christine Aleman says she saw one just laughing and shaking his head but he was on the phone... When I walked in the movie theater... it was filled with sorority girls. Now I see where they get their radical ideas from.. that movie was so dramatic and had a lot of bad influences. Kids, please do not try those activities home!

Then I go eat taco and corn with Flora because she has to get some for Shingo. Poor guy he will make it through. And now I am listening to the sweet sounding music of The Script.

I should study now but I will save that for later since I value my sleep more right now. I have 2 finals on Monday then I will be out. I wish I were done already so I could blog all night. But that can wait till summer when I really have something to talk about (yeah you guessed it right, my life!).
